#PEREGRIN TOOK FULL#
It's quiet, subtle, and full of meaning - exactly how the most profound moments of Tolkien's work ought to be. Ian McKellen's physical and verbal delivery of the line is perfect, and suggests to me that he understands exactly what Gandalf means when calls it a "fool's hope". He admits that he himself no less a fool than Pippin for embarking on this hopeless endeavor in the first place and that for all the struggles and irritation they have caused one another, here they are: two fools together, staring down oblivion with no recourse other than to hope this crazy plan of theirs somehow works out. In this exchange, we see a great example of Gandalf's humility despite his station and power. Has frequently called him a "fool of a Took" and so on, positioning himself to Pippin as the curmudgeonly elder endlessly frustrated with the shortcomings and thoughtlessness of this teenager the group this stuck with. The relationship between Gandalf and Pippin is one of the reasons I love this scene from ROTK (book and film) so much.Īt this point, Gandalf's interaction with Pippin has frequently been one of exasperation. There's a reason in the movies that he's the one who asks about second breakfast. Wake that sluggard Fatty! At least he must get up and see us off.’ I am just going to saddle the ponies, and fetch the one that is to be the baggage-carrier. Come on! Sam is already getting breakfast ready. ‘All right! What is it?’ said Frodo, still shaken and bewildered. Merry was standing there with a candle in one hand, and banging on the door with the other. There are a number of comments to this effect, like the beginning of chapter 6:įrodo woke suddenly. And he's definitely softer than the others, at least at first. He's the heir of the thain of the shire, which makes him the closest thing the hobbits have to royalty. He's effectively a teenager (he's ~26, but the hobbit age of maturity is 33).

It's heresy around here, but I much prefer Movie gandalf, who mostly pretends to be grumpy to keep up appearances.īut it's also true that pippin is obnoxious. And also it's been a little since I've read the books so please forgive any errors in context or comments on the events of the books.īook Gandalf is a straight up grumpy old man. *First of all I'm on mobile so forgive any typos or misspellings. It's again understandable why he goes off on Pippin. And finally Gandalf actually knowing what the Palantir was and it's purpose. Then also being stalked by one of the Nazgul. Again Gandalf could be seen as under stress as just dealing with Saruman, who let slip some of the plans of Sauron. And then when traveling from Isengard back to Helms Deep, Pippin acted impulsively and grabbed the Palantir. It's understandable for Gandalf to be a little in edge knowing a little about the whole that lurked there and wanting to get through as quickly and quietly as possible. In Moria, they have been marching for days on end through a pitch black abandoned mine via a route they chose as a literal last resort.

Also, the free times where Gandalf yells at him is when Pippin makes a very big mistake at some of the absolute times.
